Under 18 · Provisional permit
Start at 15½ with driver education. The drive test waits until you have held the permit for six months, practiced 50 hours, and finished driver training.

- 01
Finish driver education, then book a DMV appointment.
You can apply from age 15½ until you turn 18. Bring a certificate of completion or enrollment for driver education. A parent or guardian signs the application. If you are over 17½ and still under 18, you may get the instruction permit without the driver-education certificates, and you cannot take the driving test until you are 18.

Pass vision, the photo, and the knowledge test.
At the DMV office you pay the application fee, pass a vision exam, have your photo taken, and take the knowledge test from the California Driver's Handbook. The passing score is 80 percent. Start the in-office test before 4:30 p.m.

Complete driver training.
The DMV drive-test checklist asks you to finish driver training before you take the driving test. Keep the certificate with your permit.

Practice for six months and log 50 hours.
Hold the provisional instruction permit for six months and practice 50 hours before the drive test. The application and fee are valid for 12 months. If the application expires before you have held the permit for six months, you reapply, and the DMV gives you credit for the time you already held a permit. Bring both the expired permit and the valid permit to the drive test.

Pass the drive test.
Schedule the drive test after the six-month wait, the 50 hours, and driver training. Proof of financial responsibility has to be in the vehicle.

Get the provisional license.
Drivers under 18 who complete this path receive a provisional license. Read the DMV provisional licensing rules before you drive alone. Applicants who skip driver education wait until 18 and do not go through this under-18 path.

Age 18+. Adult instruction permit
Apply at a DMV office. Driver education is not required for the adult instruction permit.
- 01
Book a DMV appointment and bring your documents.
At 18 or older you apply for an instruction permit without a driver-education certificate. Complete the driver's license application and bring identity and residency proof.

Topics CA learners often miss

Traffic signs & signals
Regulatory, warning, and guide signs — including shapes and colors the DMV expects you to recognize quickly.

Right-of-way & intersections
Who goes first at stops, yields, turns, and pedestrian situations — a frequent weak spot on practice runs.

Speed & following distance
California speed rules and safe following distance show up often; don’t treat them as optional trivia.

Sharing the road
Bikes, pedestrians, large vehicles, and lane use — CA roadway norms that differ from “generic US” quizzes.
