Ages 15–17 · Learner's license

Start at 15. Plan on 12 months, or until 18, and 50 hours with 10 at night before the driving test.

  1. 01

Finish traffic law and substance education, then apply at 15.

A learner's license starts at 15. If you are under 18, a parent, legal guardian, or adoptive step-parent signs the parental consent form. Complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course, unless you already passed a driver education course at a certified school that exempts you. Also complete the driver education traffic-safety requirement listed for teens.

  2. 02

Pass vision, hearing, and the Class E knowledge exam.

The service center gives the vision and hearing tests. The knowledge exam is 50 multiple-choice questions. You need 80 percent, which is 40 of 50. Study the official Florida driver license handbook.

  3. 03

Hold the learner's license for 12 months and log 50 hours.

Hold it for 12 months, or until you turn 18, whichever comes first. A licensed driver who is at least 21 is with you. For the first three months you drive in daylight. After that you may drive until 10 p.m. A parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult over 21 certifies 50 hours, including 10 at night. You also need no moving-violation conviction for that year, or only one if adjudication was withheld.

Supervised practice, including hours after dark. The wheel is on the left.

    Under 18

  4. 04

Pass the driving skills test at 16.

The car needs a valid registration, proof of insurance, and it has to pass the examiner's basic safety inspection.

  5. 05

Drive under the age limits until you are 18.

At 16 you may drive from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. unless you are going to or from work, or a licensed driver who is at least 21 is with you. At 17 those hours are 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., with the same exceptions.

Topics Florida learners often miss

  • Traffic signs that look alike

Similar warning and regulatory signs trip people up — shapes, colors, and meanings from the Florida handbook.

  • Right-of-way & intersections

Stops, yields, turns, and pedestrian situations — a frequent weak spot on practice runs.

  • Following distance & headlights

Safe following distances and when headlights are required show up often on Florida-style knowledge questions.

  • Alcohol awareness & safe driving

DUI/alcohol topics and everyday safe-driving rules — treat them as must-know, not optional trivia.

FAQ

Is this a free Florida DHSMV practice test?
Yes. You can start free Florida practice tests on VehiWheel — the first 3 FL tests at no cost. The Exam Emulator uses that same free pool until you unlock Premium for the full bank.
Does this help with the Florida Class E / permit knowledge test?
Yes. The Class E written knowledge exam is what most learners mean by the Florida permit test. VehiWheel practices those knowledge topics for Florida. Always pair practice with the official Florida Driver Handbook.
Is Florida DHSMV the same as a Florida DMV?
Florida driver licensing is run by DHSMV / FLHSMV (Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles), not a statewide office branded “DMV.” People still search “Florida DMV practice test” — VehiWheel labels FL prep with DHSMV so it matches official language, while covering the same knowledge-test intent.
Is VehiWheel the official Florida FLHSMV?
No. We are an independent study app. Selecting Florida loads FL-focused practice and exam content. Confirm fees, TLSAE course requirements, retakes, and final rules on the official FLHSMV site and Driver Handbook.
How do I start Florida practice?
Tap Start free Florida practice. We pin Florida as your state and open the Tests library so you can begin immediately on web or continue later in the apps.
Are there FL study materials beyond practice tests?
When enabled for your account and state, Learn Materials can include Florida handbook video chapters and related study options. Availability depends on Settings — check Learn Materials after selecting FL.
