Ages 15–17 · Instruction permit
Driver education, a nine-month permit, and 50 hours with 10 at night.

- 01
Enroll in driver education and apply at 15.
A parent or legal guardian consents. You must be enrolled in an approved driver education course. Then pass the vision and written tests.

Pass vision and the written test.
The instruction permit is valid for up to two years. Night driving is limited to a supervising adult: Sunday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Local curfews can be stricter.

Vision and the written test. - 03
Hold the permit for nine months and log 50 hours.
Practice at least 50 hours, including 10 at night, with a parent or another adult who is at least 21 and holds a valid license. You cannot pick up a driving conviction during those nine months. A conviction restarts a nine-month wait. Passengers are limited to one in the front seat and the number of seat belts in the back. Everyone wears a belt. Phone use, including hands-free, is banned under 19 except in an emergency.

Finish driver education and pass the road test.
A parent or guardian certifies the 50 hours and either comes with you to consent or signs a notarized consent form. You must have completed the state-approved driver education course.

The road test. - 05
Drive on the initial license until the full license.
At 16 or 17 the night limits stay in place. For the first 12 months, or until you turn 18, you may carry only one passenger under 20, unless that passenger is your sibling, stepsibling, child, or stepchild. You need a conviction-free record for six months before you turn 18 to move to the full licensing phase. A conviction can extend the limits past 18.

Ages 18 through 20 who did not take an approved driver education course in high school must finish a six-hour adult driver education course before the license. Phone use, including hands-free, is still banned under 19 except in an emergency.

Topics Illinois learners often miss

Road-sign identification
Competitors and SOS prep guides treat signs as a big share of the exam — shapes, colors, and meanings from Rules of the Road.

Illinois traffic laws & speed limits
State-specific law topics that generic “US DMV” quizzes often skip or oversimplify.

Right-of-way & intersections
Stops, yields, turns, and pedestrian situations — a frequent weak spot on practice runs.

Safe driving & alcohol awareness
Following distance, sharing the road, and alcohol-related rules — must-know for permit and license prep.

- Yes. You can start free Illinois practice tests on VehiWheel — the first 3 IL tests at no cost. The Exam Emulator uses that same free pool until you unlock Premium for the full bank.
- Does this help with the Illinois permit knowledge test?
- Yes. The SOS written knowledge exam is what most learners mean by the Illinois permit / instruction-permit test. VehiWheel practices those knowledge topics for Illinois. Always pair practice with the official Rules of the Road.
- Is Illinois SOS the same as an Illinois DMV?
- Illinois driver licensing is run by the Secretary of State (SOS), not a statewide office branded “DMV.” People still search “Illinois DMV practice test” — VehiWheel labels IL prep as SOS so it matches official language, while covering the same knowledge-test intent.
- Is VehiWheel the official Illinois SOS?
- No. We are an independent study app. Selecting Illinois loads IL-focused practice and exam content. Confirm fees, appointments, and final rules on the official Illinois SOS site and Rules of the Road.
- How do I start Illinois practice?
