  1. 01

Take Segment 1, starting at 14 years and 8 months.

Segment 1 is at least 24 hours of classroom instruction over three or more weeks, no more than two classroom hours in a day. You need at least four classroom hours before any driving. Then at least six hours behind the wheel, no more than one hour a day, with at least three of those hours before classroom ends. You also need at least four hours of observation in the training car. Pass the Segment 1 exam with at least 70 percent. Remaining driving is finished no later than three weeks after classroom ends.

Segment 1: classroom, then driving with an instructor.

  2. 02

Get the Level 1 license at 14 years and 9 months.

Bring the Segment 1 certificate to a Secretary of State office. A parent or guardian signs. Only a licensed parent, guardian, or designated driver age 21 or older may coach you. Keep a driving log.

  3. 03

Finish Segment 2, then reach 50 hours.

Segment 2 is at least six classroom hours and a written exam. You can start it after you have held Level 1 for three months and logged 30 hours, including 2 at night. Before the skills test you need the full 50 hours, including 10 at night, and you must have held Level 1 for six months. You can apply for the skills test at 15 once those pieces are done.

  4. 04

    Pass the driving skills test.

An approved testing organization gives the test. It includes a vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and an on-road drive. Ask that office what the fee is.

  5. 05

Move to Level 2 at 16.

Level 2 requires age 16, a passed skills test, and a driving record that is crash-free and violation-free for 90 days before issuance. The license updates in the system. You do not go back to an office only to pick up Level 2.

FAQ

Is this a free Michigan SOS practice test?
Yes. You can start free Michigan practice tests on VehiWheel — the first 3 MI tests at no cost. The Exam Emulator uses that same free pool until you unlock Premium for the full bank.
Does this help with the Michigan permit knowledge test?
Yes. The SOS written knowledge exam is what most learners mean by the Michigan permit / Level 1 GDL written test. VehiWheel practices those knowledge topics for Michigan. Always pair practice with What Every Driver Must Know.
Is Michigan SOS the same as a Michigan DMV?
Michigan driver licensing is run by the Secretary of State (SOS), not a statewide office branded “DMV.” People still search “Michigan DMV practice test” — VehiWheel labels MI prep as SOS so it matches official language, while covering the same knowledge-test intent.
Is VehiWheel the official Michigan SOS?
No. We are an independent study app. Selecting Michigan loads MI-focused practice and exam content. Confirm fees, appointments, and final rules on the official SOS site and What Every Driver Must Know.
How do I start Michigan practice?

When enabled for your account and state, Learn Materials can include Michigan handbook video chapters and related study options. Availability depends on Settings — check Learn Materials after selecting MI.
