- 01
Pass the knowledge test and vision at 15½.
You may test online, at select deputy registrar locations, or at a driver exam station. The test is 40 questions. You need 75 percent correct. If you fail, wait at least 24 hours. Online testing allows two attempts in six months. If you tested online, the deputy registrar does the vision screening when you buy the permit.

A parent or other responsible adult co-signs if you are under 18 and not emancipated. Under 16, a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor sits in the passenger seat. At 16 or older, a licensed driver over 21 may ride with you, except from midnight to 6 a.m., when the passenger must be a parent, guardian, custodian, or a licensed driver age 21 or older named on a notarized form. Everyone wears a seat belt.
- 03
Finish driver education: 24 hours of class and 8 hours of driving.
Take the class at a licensed driver training school. The 24 hours can be classroom or online. The 8 hours are driving. Bring the driver education certificate to the driving test.

The co-signer comes with you if you are still under 18. For the first year you cannot drive from midnight to 6 a.m. unless a parent, guardian, or custodian is with you, a named licensed driver age 21 or older is with you, or you are driving to work, school, or a religious event with the BMV documentation. You cannot carry more than one non-family passenger unless a parent or guardian is with you. No mobile devices. After 12 months, and while you are still under 18, the night limit becomes 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., with the same kinds of exceptions.

Topics Ohio learners often miss

Road sign recognition
Warning, regulatory, and guide signs are a common failure area on Ohio-style practice — shapes, colors, and meanings from the Driver Manual.

Right-of-way & emergency vehicles
Intersections and emergency-vehicle right-of-way situations trip people up when they only skim the handbook.

Traffic laws & vehicle rules
Ohio roadway and vehicle regulation topics that generic “US DMV” quizzes often skip or oversimplify.

Safe driving practices
Following distance, sharing the road, and everyday safe-driving habits that show up on temps / knowledge prep.

FAQ
- Is this a free Ohio BMV practice test?
- Yes. You can start free Ohio practice tests on VehiWheel — the first 3 OH tests at no cost. The Exam Emulator uses that same free pool until you unlock Premium for the full bank.
- Does this help with the Ohio temps / TIPIC permit test?
- Yes. The BMV written knowledge exam is what most learners mean by the Ohio temps or TIPIC (Temporary Instruction Permit) test. VehiWheel practices those knowledge topics for Ohio. Always pair practice with the official Ohio Driver Manual.
- Is Ohio BMV the same as an Ohio DMV?
- Ohio driver licensing is run by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), not a statewide office branded “DMV.” People still search “Ohio DMV practice test” — VehiWheel labels OH prep as BMV so it matches official language, while covering the same knowledge-test intent.
- Is VehiWheel the official Ohio BMV?
- No. We are an independent study app. Selecting Ohio loads OH-focused practice and exam content. Confirm fees, online/in-person testing options, and final rules on the official BMV site and Driver Manual.
- How do I start Ohio practice?
- Tap Start free Ohio practice. We pin Ohio as your state and open the Tests library so you can begin immediately on web or continue later in the apps.
- Are there OH study materials beyond practice tests?
- When enabled for your account and state, Learn Materials can include Ohio handbook video chapters and related study options. Availability depends on Settings — check Learn Materials after selecting OH.
