Ages 15–17 · Learner, then provisional
Classroom first, a learner license at 15, six months of practice, then the instructor hours, the night hours, and Impact Texas Teen Drivers.

- 01
Start driver education, then apply at 15.
You may start the classroom course at 14. You cannot apply for the learner license until 15. The concurrent method lets you apply after the first 6 classroom hours. The block method waits until all 24 classroom hours are done. Bring a parent or guardian, or a notarized application they signed, plus a diploma, GED, or verification of enrollment.

Pass the knowledge test and the vision exam.
If you did not pass the knowledge exam during the classroom course, you take it at the driver license office. You also pass a vision exam, give a signature and thumbprints, have your photo taken, and pay the fee.

Practice for six months with an adult in the front seat.
A licensed adult who is at least 21 sits in the front passenger seat. Phones are not allowed, including hands-free use, except in an emergency. Hold the learner license for at least six months, unless you turn 18 first. A suspension adds those days back onto the six months.

Finish the behind-the-wheel hours.
While you hold the learner license, finish 7 hours watching the instructor drive, 7 hours driving while the instructor watches, and 30 hours of practice with a licensed driver who is at least 21. At least 10 of those 30 hours are at night. These hours are part of the learner period, not a new wait after the six months.

Finish Impact Texas Teen Drivers, then pass the drive test.
Complete Impact Texas Teen Drivers after the behind-the-wheel work and within 90 days before the drive test. You must be 16 or 17 and have held the learner license for six months.

Get the provisional license.
The provisional license lets you drive on your own with teen restrictions. It is the step before an unrestricted license. Read the DPS provisional page for the limits that apply until you are older.

Ages 18–24. Adult driver education
A six-hour adult course comes before the tests. The teen 30-hour log does not apply.
- 01
Take the six-hour adult driver education course.
Ages 18 through 24 need a six-hour adult driver education course before testing for a first Texas driver license. DPS waives that course for a new resident 18 or older who surrenders a valid, unexpired license from another state.

Topics Texas learners often miss

Highway signs & markings
Signs and pavement markings are a large share of DPS questions — shapes, colors, and meanings from the handbook.

Right-of-way & intersections
Stops, yields, turns, and pedestrian situations — frequent misses when learners only skim the handbook.

Speed limits & Texas road rules
Posted limits, school zones, and TX-specific roadway norms that generic “US DMV” quizzes often skip.

Alcohol, DWI & Move Over
Impairment laws and Move Over / Slow Down rules show up often — treat them as must-know, not optional trivia.

FAQ
- Is this a free Texas DPS practice test?
- Yes. You can start free Texas DPS practice tests on VehiWheel — the first 3 TX tests at no cost. The Exam Emulator uses that same free pool until you unlock Premium for the full bank.
- Does this help with the Texas permit knowledge test?
- Yes. The DPS written knowledge exam is what most learners mean by the Texas permit test. VehiWheel practices those knowledge topics for Texas. Always pair practice with the official Texas Driver Handbook (DL-7).
- Is Texas DPS the same as a Texas DMV?
- Texas driver licensing is run by the Department of Public Safety (DPS), not a statewide “DMV.” People still search “Texas DMV practice test” — VehiWheel labels TX prep as DPS so it matches official language, while covering the same knowledge-test intent.
- Is VehiWheel the official Texas DPS?
- No. We are an independent study app. Selecting Texas loads TX-focused practice and exam content. Confirm fees, attempt limits, and final rules on the official DPS site and Driver Handbook.
- How do I start Texas practice?
- Tap Start free Texas practice. We pin Texas as your state and open the Tests library so you can begin immediately on web or continue later in the apps.
- Are there TX study materials beyond practice tests?
- When enabled for your account and state, Learn Materials can include Texas handbook video chapters and related study options. Availability depends on Settings — check Learn Materials after selecting TX.
